Mary mother of hope and grace- Wote Shrine

The Shrine of Mary, Mother of Hope and Grace is a Marian shrine under the Catholic Diocese of Wote, established to serve the faithful of Makueni County and pilgrims from across Kenya and beyond. The shrine sits atop Kalembwani Hill in Kiongwani, a place of natural beauty and spiritual serenity that reflects the grace and peace of the Mother of God.

The shrine was officially opened and commissioned by the Catholic Diocese of Wote, marking a new chapter of Marian devotion in this region. It stands as a beacon of hope for the people of Makueni — a county shaped by resilience, faith, and a deep love for Our Lady.

The Diocese of Wote itself is one of Kenya’s newest Catholic dioceses, erected on 22 July 2023, and covers the vast territory of Makueni County. The establishment of this Marian shrine reflects the diocese’s commitment to fostering deep spiritual roots and offering the faithful a sacred space for prayer, healing, and encounter with God.

Why Come to the Shrine?

The shrine is a place where:

  • Pilgrims seek healing — physical, emotional, and spiritual
  • Families pray together and renew their consecration to Mary
  • The Sacraments are celebrated — Holy Mass, Confession, Anointing of the Sick
  • Personal intentions are brought before Our Lady
  • The Way of the Cross is prayed, walking in the footsteps of Christ
  • Marian devotions including the Rosary are prayed daily
  • Quiet contemplation and retreat are embraced in the serene hilltop setting

Our Spirituality

The shrine is rooted in the great tradition of Marian devotion within the Catholic Church. We draw inspiration from Mary’s Fiat — her “yes” to God — and invite every pilgrim to renew their own surrender to God’s will. Mary, as Mother of Hope, reminds us that no situation is beyond God’s mercy. As Mother of Grace, she leads us deeper into the sacramental life of the Church.
